IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and neurotoxin treatments like Letybo, Botox or Dysport are two of our most popular services — and it’s a common question whether they can be done together or need to be spaced apart. The good news: they can absolutely be part of the same treatment plan. Here’s how to think about the timing.
Why the Question Comes Up
IPL and neurotoxin work in completely different ways and target different tissue layers. IPL uses light energy to address pigment, redness, and sun damage at the skin’s surface and dermis. Neurotoxin is injected into targeted facial muscles to relax movement and soften dynamic wrinkles. Because one involves heat/light energy on the skin’s surface and the other involves injections, timing mostly comes down to minimizing swelling, bruising, and skin sensitivity — not any direct interaction between the treatments themselves.
General Guideline
A commonly recommended approach:
- Neurotoxin before IPL: Wait about 2 weeks after neurotoxin before doing IPL, allowing the product to fully settle into the muscle
- IPL before neurotoxin: Wait about 1–2 weeks after IPL before neurotoxin, allowing any redness, swelling, or surface irritation from the light treatment to fully resolve
Some providers are comfortable with shorter windows depending on the specific areas treated and how the skin responds, but building in this buffer is the safest default.
Why We Recommend Spacing Them Out
Skin sensitivity after IPL. Immediately following IPL, the skin can be more reactive, warm, or mildly swollen, especially if treating active sun damage or redness. Injecting neurotoxin into skin that’s still in this reactive state can make it harder to gauge injection response accurately and may increase bruising risk.
Precision matters for neurotoxin. Neurotoxin results depend on precise placement into specific muscles. If the face is swollen or inflamed from a recent IPL session, it can be more difficult to identify landmarks accurately, potentially affecting results.
Bruising risk. Both treatments can independently increase the chance of mild bruising. Stacking them too close together compounds that risk unnecessarily.
Can They Be Done on the Same Day?
Generally, no — we don’t recommend doing IPL and neurotoxin injections in the same session. While there’s no dangerous interaction between the two, the combined skin stress and increased bruising/swelling risk isn’t worth it when spacing them out gives you a smoother experience and just as good (if not better) results.
What About Ongoing Maintenance?
If you’re a regular patient doing both treatments on a maintenance schedule, we’ll usually stagger your appointments so that neither treatment falls too close to the other. For example, alternating IPL sessions with neurotoxin touch-ups every few weeks keeps both treatments working without overlapping recovery windows.
The Bottom Line
IPL and neurotoxin are a great combination for patients who want to address both pigment/redness and dynamic wrinkles — you just don’t want to do them back-to-back on the same day or within the same week. A little spacing goes a long way toward comfortable healing and optimal results.
