Why Cheap Botox Can Be Dangerous

We get it — Botox deals are tempting. A Groupon for $7 a unit, a “Botox party” at someone’s home, a med spa offering prices that seem almost too good to be true. When it’s a treatment you’re getting regularly, the cost adds up, and saving money feels like a smart move.

But when it comes to neurotoxin injections, the risks of cutting corners are real — and they go well beyond a result you simply don’t love.

Here’s what patients should know before chasing the lowest price.

What Can Go Wrong With Botox

Botox — and its counterparts Dysport, Letybo, Xeomin, and Daxxify — are FDA-approved neuromodulators that work by temporarily relaxing targeted muscles. In trained hands, they’re remarkably safe and effective. But they are injectable medications being placed into precise anatomical locations on your face. Technique, product integrity, and provider knowledge matter enormously.

Drooping eyelids or brows (ptosis) One of the most common complications from imprecise Botox placement is ptosis — a drooping of the eyelid or brow that can last weeks to months. It happens when the toxin migrates to muscles it wasn’t intended to reach, most often due to improper injection depth, incorrect placement, or too much product in the wrong location.

Asymmetry Uneven results are another frequent consequence of inexperienced injection technique. Facial anatomy varies significantly from person to person, and understanding how to read and work with individual muscle patterns is a skill that takes training and experience to develop.

Frozen or unnatural appearance The “frozen face” look isn’t a Botox inevitability — it’s the result of too much product, placed incorrectly, by someone who hasn’t been trained to balance treatment with natural movement. A skilled injector knows how to achieve meaningful relaxation without erasing your expressions.

Counterfeit or diluted product This is where cheap Botox becomes genuinely dangerous. There is a black market for counterfeit neurotoxins, and it is not small. Fake or improperly stored product can be ineffective at best — and at worst, can cause serious adverse reactions. Legitimate Botox is purchased through authorized distributors and handled according to strict storage and handling protocols.

What “Cheap” Often Actually Means

When a provider is offering Botox at dramatically below-market prices, something has to give. It may mean:

  • The product is heavily diluted, so you’re getting less actual toxin per unit than you think
  • The injector has minimal training or is operating outside their scope of practice
  • The facility is cutting corners on safety protocols, sanitation, or proper product sourcing
  • The low price is a bait-and-switch to get you in the door

In Texas, Botox must be administered by or under the supervision of a licensed physician. When treatments are being performed at pop-up events, in non-medical settings, or by unlicensed individuals, you have no guarantee of who is actually responsible for your care — or what is actually being injected.

What to Look For Instead

The good news is that safe, high-quality Botox doesn’t have to be out of reach. Here’s what to prioritize when choosing a provider:

  • Physician oversight. In a physician-led practice, there is direct medical accountability for every treatment.
  • Transparent pricing per unit. You should know exactly how many units you’re receiving and at what cost.
  • A thorough consultation. A good injector asks about your goals, assesses your anatomy, and explains their approach before touching a needle.
  • Authentic product. Don’t hesitate to ask whether product is purchased through an authorized distributor.
  • A track record you can see. Before and after photos, reviews, and word-of-mouth matter.

At Peak Aesthetics & Wellness, every injection is performed under physician oversight using authentic, properly sourced product. We’d rather help you understand what a realistic, safe treatment plan looks like than compete on price for something that affects your health and your face.
