Hyaluronic acid (HA) filler is a soft, gel-like injectable made from a substance that naturally occurs in your body and plays a key role in keeping skin hydrated, plump, and supported. In aesthetic medicine, HA fillers are used to restore lost volume, enhance facial contours, smooth lines, and improve overall facial balance. Because hyaluronic acid attracts and holds water, these fillers create a natural, supple look rather than a stiff or overfilled appearance.
As we age, we gradually lose collagen, elastin, bone density, and facial fat — all of which contribute to volume loss and changes in facial shape. This can lead to hollowing in the cheeks and temples, deepened folds, under-eye shadows, and sagging along the jawline. HA fillers help replace this waning structural support, restoring youthful contours and softening signs of aging while maintaining natural movement and expression.
HA fillers are used strategically and conservatively, often placed deeper in the tissue to mimic the position of youthful fat pads and provide lift rather than simply filling lines. Treatment is highly individualized and may involve areas such as the cheeks, chin, lips, temples, or under-eyes. Because HA fillers are reversible and adjustable, they offer a high level of safety and flexibility when performed by an experienced physician.
Expected results include immediate improvement in volume and contour, with continued refinement as swelling subsides over the following days. The outcome should look refreshed, balanced, and natural — not obvious or overdone. Depending on the product used and the treatment area, results typically last 12–24 months. With proper technique and thoughtful planning, HA filler can subtly restore youthful structure and enhance your natural beauty.
Dermal Filler Procedure
HA filler injections take less than 30 minutes to administer in a doctor’s office, depending on the area. A fine needle is used for the injection, which is given under the skin in the targeted area to add volume or fill in wrinkles and folds. Because most fillers contain lidocaine to improve comfort, an anesthetic may not be needed. However, Dr. Brantly may still elect to use a topical anesthetic on the area or nerve blocks before giving the injection. Afterward, Dr. Brantly may gently massage the treated area(s).Once treatment is completed, patients can return to their regular activities with virtually no downtime. For lip filler, swelling may occur for the first 2-3 days. Ice packs are recommended. For the first 24 hours after treatment, to reduce the risk of complications, patients should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat exposure, and alcohol consumption.
Results of Dermal Filler Injections
The results of HA filler are visible immediately after injection; any swelling and bruising, to which ice can be applied, should subside during the next few days. Results can last 6 to 9 months, and, in some cases, up to a year or two. However, according to its manufacturer, “Results from injectable dermal filler vary and correction is temporary. Supplemental ‘touch up’ treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal correction of wrinkles and folds.
